I have a wonderful memory of Jean Paul Belmondo a loyal Roland Garros spectator and one of the greatest french actors whom I greatly admired through his films especially “The Professional” (a 1981 French action thriller film directed by Georges Lautner). My only meeting with french legend “Bebel” took place in 1989 during my quarter-final against Michael Chang. At one set all and 4/1 for me in the 3rd set, the referee stops the match for the 3rd time because of the rain. This time I decided not to go to the locker room and preferred to wait for the rain to pass in a place just behind the door of the center court in a hurry to finish this match that I felt was within my reach. And there, Belmondo is in the same space as me and said “Ronald! I'm counting on you to win I can't stand Chang antics and you are the last French speaking player in the tournament ”. I'm flattered, I laugh too, but I change the subject and tell him that I have always admired his acting career and especially the movies "Borsalino" and "The Professional". Unfortunately after this unexpected encounter and back on the court after the rain it was Chang who ended up winning in 4 sets. Too bad, but I was happy to have been able to chat with the "Professional" who left us in 2021. Rest In Peace “Bebel”!
Fidèle spectateur de Roland Garros je garde un merveilleux souvenir de Jean Paul Belmondo que j’admirais beaucoup a travers ses films et “Le Professionel” (Dirige par Georges Lautner en 1981). Ma seule rencontre avec “Bebel” se déroule alors en 1989 lors de mon 1/4 de finale contre Michael Chang. A un set partout, 4/1 pour moi au 3eme set, l’arbitre arrête le match pour la 3eme fois a cause de la pluie. Cette fois ci je decide de ne pas rentrer au vestiaire et préfère attendre que la pluie passe dans un endroit juste derrière la porte du court central, pressé de finir ce match que je sentais a ma portée. Et la, Belmondo est dans le même espace que moi et me dit “Ronald! Je compte sur toi pour gagner je ne supporte pas les ruses de Chang et tu es le dernier Francophone du tournoi”. Je suis flatté, je ris aussi mais je change de sujet et lui dit que j’ai toujours admiré sa carrière d’acteur et notamment les films “Borsalino” et “Le Professionel”. Malheureusement après cette rencontre inattendue et a la “Professionnel” qui nous as quittes en 2021. Repose en Paix “Bebel”!
